Those required for doing business within the city limits of Sedalia

Occupational License:  For merchants dealing in the selling of any goods, wares, or merchandise at any store, stand, or place occupied and maintained for that purpose within the city every merchant doing business within the city must pay an annual license tax as of the first day of June in the amount indicated below:

•  On the first $1,000,000 or less of gross business done, a tax of 0.50% ($.50) per $1,000 of such amount or any part thereof


•  On the second $1,000,000 of gross business done, a tax of 0.0375% ($.375) per $1,000 of such amount or any part thereof


•  On the third $1,000,000 of gross business done, a tax of 0.025% ($.25) per $1,000,000 of such amount or any part thereof

•  The minimum license tax under this section shall be $12.50

•  The annual taxes levied and to be collected under this section shall be established and determined on an annual tax year from June first to the last day of May next succeeding, or from the date of commencing business to the next succeeding last day of May

•  Effective 6/1/1994 a certificate insurance for worker's comp coverage is required prior to issuance of a license.  "Under state law, any employer with five or more employees or construction business with one or more employees is required to have workers comp coverage."

Requirements for a new occupational license:

•  Know that the area is properly zoned for the type of business
•  For food service, an inspection and permit by the City Health Inspector
•  Copy of your Missouri retail license
•  Estimate of gross receipts for the license year
•  A building permit if new or remodel construction is involved
•  A certificate of occupancy issued by the building and fire departments established by Sedalia code Chapter 26, Section 56-58

Contractors and Subcontractors License:  For any person, firm, or corporation engaging in the contracting business of either building, plumbing, cement, brick, block and stone, landscaping, or tree service, cabinet, road and street construction, painting and paperhanging, drywall, or plastering, bridge, sewer, air conditioning, or heating, electrical, and other miscellaneous contracting services.

Such license fees are as follows:

•  With gross earnings not in excess of $25,000                                        $12.50
•  With gross earnings of $25,000 but not in excess of $50,000                $25.00
•  With gross earnings of $50,000 but not in excess of $100,000              $50.00
•  With gross earnings of $100,000 but not in excess of $200,000            $75.00
•  With gross earnings in excess of $200,000                                            $100.00 

Transient Merchants and Peddlers License:  For any person, firm or corporation utilizing a permanent location on a temporary basis or conducting business door to door.  Application for such license fees shall be made thirty days prior to conducting business.

Liquor License:  For any business selling packaged liquor.  Number of licenses limited to specific number for our population base.  Application form may be obtained if license is available.  County and state liquor licenses are a prerequisite.  Applications are reviewed, a police records check is made and submitted to city council for final approval.  The city rate schedule established by the city council will determine the fee.  Application process requires minimum of thirty days.  A county and state license are also required and can be obtained following receipt of the city liquor license.
